Lake Hickory Decks and Viewmont Porches Both Lose the Afternoon to the Sun
Hickory’s established neighborhoods in Viewmont, around Lake Hickory Country Club, and near Lenoir-Rhyne have porches under mature trees that still bake on the west side after 2 p.m. On Lake Hickory and out toward Bethlehem, decks face the water and the setting sun at the same time. Add the storms that build over the Brushy Mountains on summer afternoons and the mosquitoes that come off the lake and the Catawba by dusk, and the deck is empty exactly when you want to be on it.
3 Summer Pain Points:
- West-facing lake decks and porches that bake from 2 p.m. until sunset
- Storms that build over the foothills and hit with little warning
- Mosquitoes off Lake Hickory and the Catawba that clear the deck by dark

Two Ways Simpli Shaded Transforms Hickory Outdoor Living Spaces
Hickory sits on the Catawba where it opens into Lake Hickory, and the two halves of town want different things. Oakwood, Kenworth and Highland are the older neighborhoods near downtown, with the mature canopy and the original porches that go with it, so what fails there is the evening rather than the afternoon. Viewmont, Green Park and Lakeland Park run newer and more open. The lake houses along the shoreline face west across the water, which means late sun hitting the deck twice, once direct and once off the surface.

Hickory homes with covered decks, pergolas, or screened porches that need a modern upgrade are ideal for motorized screens, which drop from the ceiling and block bugs and glare while keeping the lake view.
- Insect screens for bug-free evenings, with your view and airflow intact
- Solar screens for heat and UV reduction on sun-exposed areas
